Workshops Schedule & Details

Day One

Day One

We kick off the morning by going over gear, camera settings, and some important things you need to know to create stunning portraits with flash. We’ll also cover everything from working with your subjects, to model releases, to which accessories to use.

Then we’re in the studio for the first of our many live shoots. We’re diving right in with live models and set-ups for you to practice with. The real goal is to get comfortable with light—learning exactly how and where to position your lights; how to create different lighting looks, and how to get really confident with flash portraits.

After our morning shoot, we’re in the classroom for lab time, editing, and retouching images. Next, we’re bringing in a delicious lunch, and then we’re back to shooting. You’re going to be shooting different set-ups, adding an additional flash, creating beauty looks, and professional headshot set-ups.

Then we get on the bus and head for an on-location sun-set portrait shoot on the beach. Afterward, we’ll be stopping at a fantastic dinner spot right near the beach where you'll have the opportunity to purchase a delicious meal and unwind from a packed-day of shooting, learning, and editing.

Day Two

Day Two

We start off the day early, and we’ll be learning to light backgrounds and the tricks of the trade to get pro-looks from your portraits. Next, we’re doing some dramatic portraits working with different kinds of backgrounds, props, and sets.

Then we’re back in the classroom for lab time and more instruction before another delicious lunch.

Right after lunch, we’re back on the bus for a location shoot with our models (and a very cool theme), and then we head back to the studio to work on shooting group shots.

We packed an awful lot in. You’ll come away with a real understanding of light; the experience of working with great models in the studio and on location; you’ll have the confidence to know which type of light to use in which situations, and you’ll pack up with some really incredible images in tow.

Make Sure You Arrive Early

The night before we kick-off the workshop, we get together for a casual dinner—on us. This is where we can spend some time getting to know each other; making new friends, and going over the details of the next day. It's the perfect way to kick back and relax before our very busy workshop begins.

The price of $1,995 ($1,895 for KelbyOne members) includes a 3 night, 2 day workshop, 2 night hotel stay, all transportation once you arrive at the hotel, breakfast, lunch, one dinner (alcohol is available for purchase but is not included), model fees, locations fees, instructions, and all other workshop expenses.

All attendees will be responsible for getting themselves to and from the host hotel/airport. You can use Uber, Lyft, or hop in a cab.
All levels of experience are welcome, but participants should be familiar with their camera gear and have some experience in either Lightroom or Photoshop.
We will be following local and CDC guidelines at the time of the workshop and we ask all attendees to follow these guidelines while participating. You will receive a welcome email right before the event that will outline the current guidelines along with important last minute information.
It does not. All attendees will be responsible for getting themselves to and from the host hotel. Once there we take over so that our workshop guests can spend time shooting, learning and working on improving their creativity.
You want to bring A DSLR or mirrorless camera and a flash. If you have two flashes, definitely bring both. If you have three flashes, only bring two. If you have four flashes, sell one of them. Also, bring a wireless trigger to fire your flash (none of that “line-of-sight stuff” where your pop-up flash triggers your off-camera flash). We’ll have light stands and stuff like that, but if you have one you like, you can bring that if it’s convenient. If you have a small portable softbox, like a Westcott Rapid Box, or even an umbrella, bring one of those, too. Most of what we’ll do will be with one flash, but there are times where that second flash is going to come in really handy. Also, we’ll be shooting portraits, so you’ll want to bring a portrait lens—something 85mm or longer. Of course, you’ll need your laptop for the editing sessions, with Lightroom or Photoshop installed or ideally both. If you need to rent any gear, I recommend—great prices, easy to use, and great people to work with.
If you have to cancel the workshop, and we are able to fill your spot 30 days before, the workshop fee is refundable. If we’re unable to fill your spot, your workshop fee minus a $1,000 service fee will be refunded. If you cancel 29 days or less before the workshop, no refunds will be available.

The Holiday Inn Express is located near our home offices in Oldsmar, Florida and is approximately 12.8 miles (23 min) from Tampa International Airport, and 12.7 miles (22 min) from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport.

Dress comfortably. This is a hands-on event. You will be both inside and outside shooting. The weather in Tampa in November is generally pretty nice with highs averaging in the high 70’s and lows in the low 60’s. Although, outside temperatures are on the warmer side during the day you will want to make sure to bring a light jacket for the evening's and in the studio, as it can sometimes be chilly.
All breakfasts, all lunches, and one dinner are included. You will be responsible for any snacks, any alcohol, and all of your additional dinners.
